Hello Again Lovelies,
I’m very excited to share my first book review on Sage Beauty. As a Birchblogger for Birchbox I had the privilege of getting a copy of this tech-savvy, fashion-forward novel set in New York City. The book has not left my side since I came home and found the package on my doorstep. The Knockoff, written by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza, is your must-read for the summer.
This novel combines my favorite interests into one story: technology, fashion, social media, and New York City. The fact that this book talked about writing code, startups, and Alexander Wang…..I was in heaven the whole time I was reading it.
The main character, Imogen Tate, is the editor of a fashion magazine called Glossy. When she returns to work after a six month medical leave, Imogen finds out that her beloved classic magazine has been turned into a website called Glossy.com. The leader of this new format is Eve Morton, Imogen’s old assistant who recently graduated from Harvard Business School.
Imogen is immediately thrown into the world of 21st century tech and is totally out of her comfort zone. She goes from being the boss to being at the mercy of Eve, who runs the office like a well-dressed dictator and makes Imogen’s life a nightmare. Imogen doesn’t know a tweet from Tumblr, but she is determined to make the best of the situation. She definitely is not computer savvy but is able to survive the drama at Glossy.com by using her charm, common sense, and years of experience in the fashion world.
Over the course of the book Imogen learns to navigate, with a few hilarious mishaps, the landscape of social media. I was cheering in my seat on the subway when Imogen finally discovered Instagram. This book has something for everyone. If you love high fashion and the celebrities wearing those fashions they are some of the fabulous supporting characters. We also see how Imogen struggles with balancing her family life with the demands of Glossy.com. There is even a glimpse into the world of startups, and one character had such an awesome idea for a site I wished it was a real app.
The writing is fresh and sophisticated, with characters that are endearing and relatable. I know you will love the Knockoff so be sure to pick it up or download it. Feel free to leave a comment here on the blog or find me on Instagram and let me know how you like the book.
xoxo
