Welcome To The Powder Room: Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Powder Foundation

As a makeup artist I am very particular about my powders.  Powder foundations can give great coverage but you have to make sure it is the right product for your skin type. Powder foundations exist as pressed powders in a compact, loose mineral products, and even creme-to-powder in a compact.  They give different levels of coverage ranging from sheer to full. Powder foundation is a good option if:

  1. You have normal to combination/oily skin
  2. Prefer a matte finish to your complexion.
  3. If you prefer to have your makeup with you on the go.
  4. If you feel like you need to touch-up throughout the day.

I would stay away from pressed powder foundation if you have very dry skin or visible pores and texture are concerns.  If this is the case then I recommend using a liquid foundation and setting it with a translucent loose powder. My favorite translucent powder is Laura Mercier’s Universal Loose Powder. It’s great for all skin types and feels weightless on the skin. It’s very fine so it will not settle into lines or pores.

The best way to apply a pressed powder foundation is with a brush. If you use the sponge that comes with your product change it once a week to avoid a build up of dirt and bacteria on your skin and in your product. I suggest investing in a retractable travel powder brush for your powder.

When using a sponge to touch up your makeup I have my own technique; I always gently pat and roll the product down the t-zone and around the perimeter of the face. Try not to rub the powder in because you will rub off your foundation and blush.

I have always loved Kat Von D’s makeup line. Many of her products are in my permanent collection. I especially adore her matte lipstick and liquid full-coverage foundation.  When I saw her powder foundation I decided to give it a try because I was in the market for a powder that would be good for the hot summer months and for setting and perfecting my liquid foundation.  I normally never wear pressed powder because my skin is more on the dry side most of the year,  but at the moment it is more combination because it is summer.  Kat von D has pleasantly surprised me again. I absolutely love this powder.

Kat’s Lock-It Tattoo Powder Foundation is a matte, full coverage, long wearing powder foundation that comes in seventeen shades. That’s right folks, seventeen shades! It is mineral oil free and fragrance free.  It has a smooth texture and works well on top of liquid foundation as well.  I apply it with my Real Techniques Powder brush. It gives excellent coverage and a flawless finish.  The product claims to be smudge proof and sweat proof. I have to agree that these claims are true. I rarely ever have to reapply this product and my complexion look perfect all day. I wear it alone and over my liquid foundation.

You can find it at Sephora stores and sephora.com for $38 dollars.
